Massage is one of the oldest therapeutic practices that exist. It derives from the instinctive practice of rubbing the affected area after a blow or when we experience pain. Obviously, the massage has a more specific intent and has been developed technically over time and in various cultures, integrating into the philosophical-medical theories of its context.
Massage is a therapy, the main tools of which are the hands of the therapist. This, through various maneuvers (friction, kneading, percussion, pressure, …) applied to the skin with the intensity and rhythm appropriate to each case, produces on the patient the desired therapeutic effects, whether they are local or reflexes.
What effects does the massage have?
The effects of the massage, as we have said, depend on the intensity and the rate at which the different maneuvers are applied. Thus, a quick and superficial massage will be toning and, on the contrary, a slow and deep massage tends to produce relaxation.
In general, the mechanical action of the massage on treated tissues translates into:
Activation of the circulation, redness and warming of the area (in energetic and / or deep maneuvers),
Activation of the venous and lymphatic return, favoring the elimination of toxins,
Softening, unplugging and improving the elasticity of soft tissue, which allows for treatment, for example, muscular contractures,
Release of substances that favor relaxation, pain relief, and decreased blood pressure.
